This Post is Brought to You by the Number 16

I’m deep into my psycho time at work and holding to carving out moments for exercise. These are fleeting when I’m not yearning for sleep (or just plain conking out in the recliner), stealing time to write or furiously cooking up healthy treats to pack for lunch each day. Yes, healthy living and losing weight are a life change, but also a commitment that the lack-of-time monster will whisper in your ear that you can get back to “when you have time again.”

So during a stolen moment on Saturday, I unpacked a few more fall/winter clothes from my trunks, including some pants circa 2001. These size 14/16 to 18 pants had become too small–pulling at the seams too small–but I still kept them folded and stored season after season. I guess somewhere deep inside, a tiny part of me clung to knowing that I could get back to that size.

Though the scale has been crawling down the past month ounce by ounce versus pound by pound, I wanted to see if my progress would show another way. Into each pair of pants I hopped. The size 18s hung baggy in the groin and thigh area and I needed to pull the drawstring at the waist. They will be too big soon.

And Eureka! The size 16s fit. Not pulling in the thigh. Not snug at the waist. Fit. Me who back in January was heading into size 22s. Fit. Me who had started to pant and sweat after climbing to the top of only one flight of stairs. Me, getting fit? Yes, and I honor ever inch of it.

Friday Fallout: My Take on This Week’s Funky Messes (Ginni Thomas, I’m Talking to You )

The Demanded Apology – Ginni Thomas, the wife of SCJ Clarence Thomas, left a message for Anita Hill requesting an apology.  Yes, that Anita Hill.  The one who accused Sir Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991.  Remember the pubic hair and Coke can testimony?  Yeah, that was its own funky mess.  So Mrs. Thomas, who one might suspect is doing this for media show or some other grasp for distorted attention, thinks it’s okay to not only make the call, but then to leave the message.  Really?  And I loved her crock about wanting to extend an “olive branch.”  Someone’s gotta be off their meds.  I’m tempted to figure out a way to give her my digits so she can call me.  Chatting with her could be quite a funny stress reliever.

More with Christine “Maybe You Should Read the Constitution” O’Donnell – Yeah, we are back on her.  And her quote from the Delaware senate candidate debate is: “Let me just clarify: You’re telling me that the separation of church and state is found in the First Amendment?”  She also made a quip about senators not being required to “memorize” the Constitution.  Yeah, but I’d expect them to be able to grasp the basic concepts while reading it.  FAIL.

Lindsay Lohan Again and Again and Again… – Here’s another “hot topic” with traction.  She got a mini-vaca from Betty Ford to appear again in court on Friday.  I love how her lawyer tries to get bonus points for her being back in rehab.  Um…note the “back in” part.  And if she’s so committed to rehab, why did she tell her probation officer that “inpatient treatment would be a hardship financially, and damaging to her career“?  No, in the world of reality, repeated arrests are what’s damaging to your career.

The judge was absolutely on point for noting the only reason she went into the program was to avoid jail.  He then ordered her to remain there through New Year’s (no discharge until January 3).  I state here yet another week that a) this is a mess and b) that something tougher is needed.  When (note I didn’t say if) she violates the rules before her February 25 court date, I hope he sticks to the threat and gives her the 180 days in jail.
