ROW80 Wednesday Check-In: 1/25/12

“People of the world today.
Are we looking for a better way of life?
We are a part of the rhythm nation.
People of the world unite.
Strength in numbers we can get it right. One time.
We are a part of the rhythm nation
.” ~ Janet Jackson

Well, things have gotten a bit rowdy over here as the birthday week train rolls on.  There’s been semi-all nighters, multiple servings of ice cream pie and even a fantasy dance-off challenge against Beyoncé and Janet Jackson.  Don’t ask.  Hey at least it was cardio.  As promised, every post this week will have a musical selection.  Scroll to the end of my updates for a taste of Rhythm Nation.

So with all that merriment, I’ve been offline a bit, out of the house and away from some goals.  I’ll be cranking hard the next few days because the festivities continue this weekend.  Saturday I’ll be going to see the Broadway series tour of Hair and Sunday I’ll be kicking it at the party of a friend who shares my b-day.

Writing/Craft

  • 1,500 words of new fiction a week either on novel WIP or short stories.  I haven’t written anything WIP-related so far this week.  I have a block of time scheduled for Thursday to work on the novel only.  No multitasking.  Just me and the words.
  • Read at least one chapter a week of a craft book.  Doing Saturday morning.  I like to do the craft reading/exercises when my mind is clear.  I’ve found it doesn’t stick as well if done at lunch on a work day or late at night.
  • Read at least one chapter of a novel each week.  Doing later today at the gym.

Social Media

  • Blog three times a week.  Three done through today, including this ROW80 update and hosting a guest blogger on Monday (another thanks to David N. Walker).  Two more pending.
  • Read, comment and share at least 10 blogs a week.  Done.
  • Check Twitter and Facebook at least once daily.  Done every day so far.

Healthy Happy Living

  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, three times a week.  Doing at least an hour tonight and at least 30 min. cardio on Friday and Saturday.  I use thirty as my minimum and then usually walk longer.  I’d love to get in a yoga class this week, but I’m not sure the schedule will allow it.
  • Finish my poncho project via crocheting one hour a week.  I’ll be working on this Saturday morning after my craft book work.  I’ll be sitting in bed with no distractions.
  • Enjoy watching one movie a week without multitasking.  Haven’t scheduled yet, though I have several DVDs stacked and waiting.

How is your week coming so far?

Well, you seem to be on track – well done to you! I have been away too – on hold – so missed two updates. Updated Sunday and today. Not caught up yet but have to keep at it. 🙂 X

  2. Congrats on staying on track!

Funny crochet story…I was writing a few days ago, and grumbling b/c the condensation from my iced tea glass was inching its way toward my notes. I complained to my husband and my kids about it…wishing our stuff from the move was here already. Cardboard didn’t stop it, the cloth I’d set it on kept getting taken (or worse…was easy to snag by the 5 year old…there went my tea).

So I was wiping away the moisture for the upteenth time that day when my crit partner hit me up on IM. She asked me how my week was going, and I told her about my current frustration. She then said…aren’t you one of those crafty hooker types? Which of course made me laugh. I said yeah, I crochet. Then she asked me why I didn’t just crochet a trivet or a coaster or something. I went to respond (probably in a snarky comment, b/c I was just that overwhelmed in the hotel with 3 kids and a grouchy husband) when I realized she was right.

So I got to work (of COURSE I brought two skeins of yarn and all my crochet hooks with me!) and in twenty minutes or so had a lovely circle coaster. Viola. No more creeping moisture monster bent on the destruction of my notes.

It made me laugh, and I love that you crochet too! Good luck with the rest of your week!

    Keep writing. 😀
    Dawn

    • I love that story, Dawn! What a great break and use of your skill to make something practical. I have some extra yarn I won’t be using in a larger project and could make coasters (for coffee spillage) or washcloths.

      • It was definitely a lightbulb moment. LOL! I started looking around for other things I could make that would make our lives easier. Not a whole lot yet, but I’ll figure something out…and it’s a good break for my fingers. 😀

      • Sock patterns is one option. I am always looking for warm options with pajamas and the extra rolls can go to that too. It won’t matter on color/texture.

  3. Great job reaching your goals during your birthday celebrating, Barbara. Am enjoying seeing Janet’s video again. What fun memories!!!

  4. Happy BIRTHDAY week Barbara! Sounds like your week is kicking off great with a lot of goals met and with a plan for the rest of the week! Woot woot – shaking pompoms and sharing a slice of your favorite cake with you! Hugs!

  5. Wooo Hooo ROW on and Party on! You’re working it in all aspects Barbara. Have a great birthday week and weekend.
