30 Days of Writing – Days 21-22

I’m on day 3 of a straggling migraine, but determined to keep up with my posts.  Ahh…the Dell Studio 17 screen only dims but so much.  I’m normally good at the balancing act that keeps attacks away, but have somehow gone off schedule and/or introduced a new element into the mix that is irritating me.  In the past, this has had a tendency to happen around vacation time, where going off schedule is easier to occur (e.g., waking up at different times).

Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?

A few of my secondary characters have children.  For example, in a story about a boy whose life experience teaches him a world of “get them before they get you” for survival, his mother and grandfather are part of the story as is a girlfriend who is pregnant with his child.  The focus, however, is on him.  I do have a main character who is pregnant.

In terms of how well I write the children, I would hope well since the stories focus on them.  Many of my stories include takes on what children have learned (or not learned) from parents.  I find it fascinating that I haven’t written anything from a parent’s point of view yet.  I wonder if this is because I am not a parent and thus feel I don’t have this perspective yet.  Something to ponder.

Tell us about one scene between your characters that you’ve never written or told anyone about before! Serious or not.

I could make something up here from a future idea, but there isn’t anything I’ve been planning to write between current characters that I haven’t.

Music Monday – Shadowfeet

2010 has been a bit of a challenge for me and I find myself winding down the year with deep gratitude and reflection.  I first heard this song by Brooke Fraser when a pair danced to it on So You Think You Can Dance.  It was mesmerizing—both the song and the choreographed routine.  Brooke’s voice has a pure ringing quality to it.  I highly recommend the entire Albertine album.

In terms of my journey this year, the lines that connect with me are “I am changing, less and less asleep made of different stuff than when I began” and from the chorus “when the world has fallen out from under me, I’ll be found in you, still standing.”  From reconnecting to and taking risks in my writing, to bearing a part of my soul at a writing conference this summer (I called it not only finding the courage to write, but also the courage to read), to the feelings of being stuck while managing through hours of post-car accident physical therapy.  To sweating for each individual pound of the 40 I’ve lost so far.  All of it has brought me to viewing my life experience in a different way—in a more purposeful way.
